Estate Watch is software I built for families settling an estate in South Carolina. It fills in the probate forms, tracks the deadlines the court sets, shows what the estate is likely to cost, and gives everyone in the family one shared place to see what has happened.

It is free. Not free for a while, and not free until you hit a limit. The forms, the deadlines and the family record do not cost anything and are not going to.

Why free

Because the part families need most is the part that is cheapest for me to give away. A form is a form. Once it is built correctly for South Carolina it costs me nothing to let another family use it, and charging for it would only mean fewer people got it right.

What I charge for is the work nobody wants to do themselves. Publishing the creditor notice. Ordering certified copies. Filing for the estate’s tax identification number. Notifying the agencies that have to be notified. Those take my time, so they cost money, and they are billed to the estate rather than to the person doing the running around.

What it does not do

It does not give legal advice, and it does not review anybody’s plan. It also does not recommend real estate agents, mine included. There is no directory, no referral button, and no fee that reaches me because a family used it.

I am aware that I am both the person who built the free tool and a person who sells houses. Keeping the software out of that business entirely is the only arrangement I am comfortable with.
